Published on: 5th February, 2025

“What you focus on, you're paying for. When you're paying your attention, is it reaping the benefits? Are you getting the reward out of it?" - Jenny Leckey

In this episode, Jenny shares the story of how of dealing with a severe cold & fever led to a profound realization about the importance of paying attention to what truly matters.

She discusses how being forced to slow down and rest stripped away the unnecessary stress and people pleasing tendencies that often burden our lives. Jenny dives into the concept of 'paying attention' and explores how our focus, energy, and mindset are like currency, urging listeners to evaluate whether their attention is truly serving their highest good. Jenny:

Hello.

2

:

I am back.

3

:

I took a little break.

4

:

Part of it was forced upon me.

5

:

Has anyone else caught

this terrible cold virus?

6

:

Not fun times.

7

:

But one thing that happens when, at

least when I get sick, not only does it

8

:

force you to slow down, it forces you

to relax and rest and be in the moment.

9

:

Um, especially having, I

think my fever got up to 102.

10

:

8.

11

:

It was something else.

12

:

I haven't been that sick in quite a while.

13

:

But another thing I noticed is things

that were previously stressing me

14

:

out were totally stripped away.

15

:

I was telling a friend that it

really stripped away the bullshit.

16

:

I literally didn't have the energy or

capacity to worry about made up scenarios

17

:

that my anxiety ridden mind likes to

give me to ponder and stress about.

18

:

I didn't have time to

worry about anything.

19

:

Uh, I had to cancel Reiki

appointments and other commitments

20

:

and I had no other choice, so

there was nothing to worry about.

21

:

I just had to because I was so

sick and that got me thinking about

22

:

everyday life in a way, even though

I felt terrible, it was very freeing.

23

:

Because it stripped away all of that

layer upon layer of shoulds and,

24

:

pressure and all of that kind of energy,

including people pleasing, right?

25

:

And I thought to myself while I was

sick, Man, I would love to be able to

26

:

harness this approach to life and bring

that with me when I'm healthy again.

27

:

Can I be that way when not forced to be?

28

:

Can I choose to be that way?

29

:

So far it's kind of working.

30

:

I still have a cough and stuff So maybe

it's cheating because I'm not fully

31

:

better the reason I'm bringing it up

is because it got me thinking about this

32

:

idea of paying attention so essentially

the things that we focus on in our day to

33

:

day and Also, the things that we choose

to stress about and worry about and

34

:

dwell on and ruminate about on a daily

basis, we are paying attention to it.

35

:

We are giving our attention.

36

:

So think about the phrase pay.

37

:

If I pay attention, that means

there's a price involved, right?

38

:

There's an energy exchange.

39

:

And this case not paying like a currency

as in cash money, but your payment is your

40

:

energy, like you are putting your focus on

something and that takes literal energy.

41

:

Like physical body energy to make

your brain operate and your system

42

:

focus on whatever it may be.

43

:

But also, you're paying it with

your mindset, you're paying it with

44

:

the emotions that you invest into

a conversation or work or any kind

45

:

of interaction you have, even if

it's with an environment, it doesn't

46

:

necessarily have to be with a person.

47

:

So You are literally

paying with your attention.

48

:

What you focus on, you're paying for.

49

:

When you're paying your attention

Is it, is it reaping the benefits?

50

:

Are you getting the reward out of it?

51

:

Are you making dividends?

52

:

Like it's like this stock

market, you're investing.

53

:

Are you actually making a profit?

54

:

Is it profitable?

55

:

Is it serving your highest good?

56

:

I was asking myself, am I mindlessly

doom scrolling and letting all

57

:

these messages, get me riled up.

58

:

Am I wasting my energy on

reacting to headlines, propaganda,

59

:

people's emotional reactions to

said headlines and propaganda?

60

:

Am I getting stuck in a rumination

cycle and paying my attention on

61

:

the wrong thing, things that are not

going to benefit, things that are not

62

:

solution focused, more problem focused.

63

:

What you pay attention to, what you are

giving your energy, your focus to is

64

:

essentially becoming part of your life.

65

:

I think with people pleasing,

we're always focusing or paying our

66

:

attention to other people's emotions.

67

:

A lot of the times, a big aspect of

people pleasing, for many of us, is

68

:

reading small social cues, trying to

read the other person, see if they

69

:

are having a negative reaction to

what you are saying or doing, and then

70

:

trying to always manage other people's

emotions instead of letting them be.

71

:

And letting them manage themselves.

72

:

And therefore you're really not getting

a good payout for that attention.

73

:

So people pleasing wise and

headlines wise, can I shift

74

:

what I'm paying my attention to?

75

:

You only have a certain amount

of energy every day and some

76

:

days it's less than others.

77

:

I am definitely dysregulated.

78

:

I'm just being honest with you.

79

:

If those of you don't know what that

means, that means my nervous system

80

:

is It's turned on and thinks there's

a threat and is either, it, it tends

81

:

to go fight, flight, freeze, and fawn.

82

:

Fawning is the typical people

pleasing place where you like act

83

:

like a fawn, I just think of Bambi

in the woods where you submit to

84

:

the predator, to the attack, right?

85

:

And try to keep everything calm.

86

:

When you're in that

state, you have a limited.

87

:

amount of energy and a limited

amount of mental and emotional focus

88

:

that you can give to any one thing

that you're paying attention to.

89

:

So first of all, cut yourself some

slack, give yourself some grace.

90

:

You can't expect yourself to operate

at the same exact energy levels and the

91

:

same attention levels every single day.

92

:

But secondly, maybe it's time for me,

and maybe this resonates with you,

93

:

but maybe it's time for me to now do

an inventory of where the majority

94

:

of my attention is being paid.

95

:

Is it really focusing on the things

that are going to have the biggest

96

:

payout for my highest good and

healing to allow me to be the best

97

:

version of myself in the world?

98

:

Or is it like an unproductive use of

my life force energy of my currency?

99

:

The hard part is, that

is a personal decision.

100

:

I was having that urge to look outside

of me and ask people, What should I do?

101

:

Where should I be doing and thinking

and feeling in these tumultuous times?

102

:

And time and time again, it always

ended up coming back to, Well,

103

:

that's a personal decision, Jenny.

104

:

what decision I need to

make to bring myself peace.

105

:

I don't mean burying your head in

the sand and ignoring All that is,

106

:

but you can pay too much of your

attention to something and it can

107

:

start to weigh you down and suck the

energy and the life force out of you.

108

:

It can start to make you feel depressed

and dysregulated, make you start

109

:

operating from a place of fear instead

of a place of love and having faith in

110

:

yourself and in others and this life.

111

:

Going back to what I said when I

was sick, about cutting through the

112

:

bullshit, essentially, I was just saying,

cutting through the stuff that I used

113

:

to pay attention to all the time that

really didn't serve any purpose that

114

:

actually just caused me more stress.

115

:

And those things included

stories that I would tell myself

116

:

preemptively worrying that someone

was going to get mad or upset or.

117

:

I was going to lose XYZ because

of this choice I was making.

118

:

Also, being fearful about taking action,

maybe addressing something with someone.

119

:

There was no point and I stopped doing

that when I got really sick and had a

120

:

fever and I survived, So obviously I don't

need that for survival I bring this story

121

:

to you, so you do not have to go through

the fever ridden aha moment that I did

122

:

and Apply it maybe to your everyday life.

123

:

Think to yourself if I were sick

in bed with a fever right now,

124

:

what little bit of attention I had?

125

:

Would I pay it towards XYZ?

126

:

Would I give my energy towards worrying

about what someone thought about the

127

:

comment I made during a work meeting?

128

:

Would I sit there and the little

bit of energy that I had , would

129

:

I spend that worrying about the

word choice I used in an email?

130

:

Hmm, I don't think so.

131

:

If I didn't do that while I had

a fever and I turned out just

132

:

fine, then there really is no need

to do that when I'm fever free.

133

:

And then, think about the compounding

effect of shifting your attention

134

:

little by little, moment by moment,

to something else that's more

135

:

productive and has a bigger payout.

136

:

Meaning, shifting your attention to the

present moment, taking some deep breaths,

137

:

focusing on your breath, going in and

out, um, thoroughly sitting and enjoying

138

:

the cup of tea or coffee that you're

consuming, tasting all of the flavors.

139

:

Feeling the warm coziness

that comes with it.

140

:

Actually really sitting and just

looking at your dog and petting

141

:

your dog and brushing it and

loving it and doing nothing else.

142

:

Just soaking up the unconditional

love that seeps from their

143

:

soul and soaks into your heart.

144

:

I think that has a bigger payoff than

ruminating about what might upset

145

:

somebody and if you're going to be

okay because you will be okay and that

146

:

is not a good way to spend your time.

147

:

Get it?

148

:

You spend your time.

149

:

Your life force energy, your emotions,

your mental capacity, those are

150

:

sacred things, and you have a limited

quantity that you can spend every day.

151

:

So my, side quest for you for the

next week is to stop maybe three or

152

:

four times a day and observe what you

are currently paying attention to.

153

:

And then jot it down.

154

:

Maybe at the end of the day, you can do a

quick reflection of was this beneficial?

155

:

Was this worthwhile?

156

:

Or make a judgment at

the end of the week.

157

:

Look for patterns in your life and see

where you're paying attention and seeing

158

:

if it's serving your highest good.

159

:

if it's getting you moving towards

160

:

solutions, healing and growth,

or is it causing stagnation, fear

161

:

and a hindrance on your wellbeing?

162

:

Go into that mindset like you would if you

were sick and decide what you want to cut

163

:

and then what you want to replace it with.

164

:

You can't control everything outside

of you, but you sure as hell can

165

:

control who you're paying attention to

and what you're paying attention to.

166

:

That is my musing for the week.

167

:

I would love to hear your thoughts.

168

:

Did this resonate with you?

169

:

Do you also have these aha

moments when you're sick?

170

:

Or is it just me?

171

:

Because that happens every time.

172

:

These aha moments are so crucial

and exciting and fun, but then the

173

:

real work is not losing them, not

being excited in the moment, but

174

:

actually like carrying it through.

175

:

Like a month from now, will I still

be riding this flow or will I fall

176

:

back into being willy nilly, not

caring about where my attention goes?

177

:

That is the big test.

178

:

That's literally the journey.

179

:

Like people keep talking about,

Oh, I'm on a healing journey.

180

:

Like that's literally the work

that is the work, you know,

181

:

day to day, moment by moment.

182

:

What are you focusing on?

183

:

What are you paying, for

with your life force energy?

184

:

Okay, let me know in the comments

and thank you so much for listening.

185

:

Stay healthy out there.

186

:

Use your neti pots.
