Jenny:

So I basically risked my People Pleaser life all in the name of some brown

2

:

sugar oat milk creamer from Trader Joe's.

3

:

Let's start off with Trader Joe's.

4

:

If you don't know what that is, it is

a magical grocery shopping experience

5

:

where you go in there and there's all

different types of unique, rare, Foods and

6

:

produce and baked goods and just heaven.

7

:

I love it.

8

:

Plus I ended up buying

a lot of plants there.

9

:

I just have a problem, but that's

for a different diary entry.

10

:

So being a vegetarian,

sometimes vegan, I don't know.

11

:

I call it the Jenny diet.

12

:

Having that unique diet, I love to go

to Trader Joe's because I have a lot of

13

:

options there and it's reasonably priced.

14

:

But the main reason I go to Trader Joe's

is their brown sugar oat milk creamer.

15

:

Oh my goodness, it has changed

my coffee drinking experience.

16

:

I even put it in hot chocolate.

17

:

I put it in my tea.

18

:

Like I'll put it in anything

because it tastes so freaking good.

19

:

Okay, let me preface it.

20

:

I love this stuff.

21

:

So this happened a few weeks ago.

22

:

I walk into Trader Joe's,

my happy place, right?

23

:

And I go there pretty often so I can get

in and out of that place pretty quickly.

24

:

Meaning I know where the creamer is.

25

:

I had been there a few weeks before, and

I saw the creamers out, which sometimes

26

:

happens with their popular items.

27

:

Remember this, okay?

28

:

That's gonna come back

later on in the story.

29

:

So a few weeks ago, it wasn't there.

30

:

I went again, and at this moment,

there still wasn't creamer.

31

:

I'm like, what the heck?

32

:

They only had coconut milk.

33

:

I'm like, ugh, I don't want that.

34

:

But I chalked it up to, they

must not have any, right?

35

:

I fill my cart and I'm

ready to get out of there.

36

:

It's just a quick shopping

trip and errands kind of thing.

37

:

I go up to the counter to check out.

38

:

Now, if you've never been there,

everyone's always super friendly, like

39

:

Hawaiian shirts and smiles, everyone's

happy and they play great music and

40

:

it's just really good energy in there.

41

:

I go up to the checkout and,

you know, they do a little

42

:

small talk, that kind of thing.

43

:

they ask you, did you find everything?

44

:

And It just came out of me.

45

:

I said, Hey, did they discontinue

the brown sugar oat milk creamer?

46

:

Cause it's my second trip.

47

:

I hadn't seen it.

48

:

I hope not.

49

:

Cause I love that stuff.

50

:

I was just making conversation.

51

:

I wasn't asking for help.

52

:

Which is people pleaser slip up number

one, I didn't ask for help, but the

53

:

cashier said, Oh, we shouldn't be.

54

:

Let me find out.

55

:

And now if you've never been

to Trader Joe's, how do they

56

:

get associates attention?

57

:

They ring a bell.

58

:

I mean, they literally ring a bell.

59

:

For a person who does not want to ask

for help, who is recovering from people

60

:

pleasing, that bell might as well have

been as big as the Liberty Bell, Ring,

61

:

ring, ring, ring, bringing all the

attention to me, the creamer person.

62

:

I felt like the whole world was

staring at me, which was not true.

63

:

This was just my brain over exaggerating.

64

:

So someone comes up And they're

like, oh, what did you need?

65

:

And they said, they'll

go check in the back.

66

:

No problem.

67

:

And then they ran to the back and

, there's people waiting in line and then

68

:

it's making me want to die even more.

69

:

I say to the cashier, this is my slipup.

70

:

I say something like, I didn't

mean to make you all do that.

71

:

I didn't mean for you to go check.

72

:

And he is like, oh, no problem.

73

:

And the other person who was

there is like ringing the

74

:

bell's the fun part of the job.

75

:

We enjoy doing that.

76

:

So not only did this person

bring up creamer, oh no, no.

77

:

They brought up an entire case.

78

:

To the front of the store with a

smile on their face and said, Oh, we

79

:

have some, they must've just ran out.

80

:

How many would you like?

81

:

Talk about customer service, but

the antithesis of that is talk about

82

:

what a pedal to the metal, rubber

to the road, people pleasing healing

83

:

experience this is because I am not

only receiving help, I'm receiving

84

:

extreme levels of care and help, right?

85

:

So, of course, I took three would have

taken more but I was going somewhere

86

:

and I didn't want it to go bad.

87

:

Okay, let's unpack this

together, shall we?

88

:

When we're talking about being a

recovering people pleaser, what I mean

89

:

by that is I'm going to have slip ups.

90

:

Shrek says that we are like

onions with many layers, as is our

91

:

people pleasing healing journey.

92

:

Let's talk about healing and

what it looks like in action.

93

:

It's an inside job and

it's also outside job.

94

:

So the outside was me actually

saying something to the cashier.

95

:

Now, my slip up was I didn't go

and ask someone explicitly, right?

96

:

I just asked if they had discontinued it.

97

:

I could have gone and asked

someone specifically on the floor.

98

:

But that's neither here nor there.

99

:

I'm going to give myself like

three out of five stars with that.

100

:

So I was able to even broach

the topic of something not

101

:

being where I needed it to be.

102

:

Great.

103

:

Good job, Jenny.

104

:

The inside job was the

most important part.

105

:

I have built up the capacity to

tolerate the tension of me feeling

106

:

weird about being the center of

attention and expressing my need.

107

:

I think that's probably what prompted

me to even say something to the

108

:

cashier because of my inside job.

109

:

Even though I knew it was going to

make me feel weird, I still brought

110

:

it up, even though it was awkward,

and I ended up with my creamer, guys.

111

:

So even with years of diligent

practice and mindful living, I still

112

:

wanted to hide, but that's okay.

113

:

Yes, and.

114

:

You can have both.

115

:

You can still be recovering

and still give it a try.

116

:

You can still feel weird about it and

kind of want to die on the inside.

117

:

And still do it.

118

:

And I also have the creamer to enjoy.

119

:

It's a win-win, right?

120

:

My reward is now I have that wonderful

creamer in my coffee every morning.

121

:

The moral of the story.

122

:

Sometimes it takes another person

to nudge you toward and through

123

:

the tension of asking for help.

124

:

And that's okay.

125

:

You will be okay.

126

:

So thank you to that cashier and

thank you to the other one who

127

:

rang the bell and the third one who

brought up an entire case of creamer.

128

:

You don't even understand how much you

helped me with my self reflection and

129

:

flexing my people pleaser healing muscle.

130

:

Now here's my challenge for you.

131

:

You go and try out asking

for help this week.

132

:

I believe in you.

133

:

You can do this.

134

:

Let me know how it goes.
